- Our meeting was held at the Scioto Southland Recreation Center, at 6:00pm. Approximately 27 people were in attendance. President Curtis Brown reminded members and guests of our decorum policy, then called the meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Pam Richards opened the meeting with prayer. Curtis recognized September birthdays and anniversaries: Diane Todd will celebrate her birthday on September 13, Matt Campbell’s birthday is September 19, and Bill Palmer will celebrate his special day on September 28. Curtis and Robert will celebrate their 10th anniversary in October. Congratulations to all!
- The Secretary’s Minutes (Pam Richards) were distributed, read and approved: 1st Motion – Judy Oberting. 2nd Motion – Kathy Palmer
- The Treasurer’s Report (Marsha Kessler) was reported, read by Curtis, discussed and approved: 1st Motion – Bill Palmer. 2nd Motion – Judy Campbell
We had a beginning balance of $3140.17. Expenses incurred included $308.00 for NNO Tshirts, $22.80 for NNO ice and $754.99 for Curtis’ NNO expenses. A $50.00 donation was deposited, giving us an ending balance of $2104.38.
- Curtis informed members that the Audit Committee met on August 4, 2025, and everything was fine. He also reminded members of our Donation Box at the front table.
- Kathryn Cull, the Assistant Liaison Director of City Council’s Community Department, addressed our members. She mentioned several events that we may be interested in attending:
- On Wednesday, September 17, from 6:00pm-7:30pm, residents are invited to meet with City Council members at the Recreation Center.
- Next week, from Sunday – Friday, is “Safety Week”. Check www.safetyweek.com for more information.
- Columbus Police officers will be patrolling neighborhood streets to reduce speed.
- There is a meeting on Wednesday, September 10, at the Fran Ryan Center to discuss ‘Carriage Houses’. Some city zoning may need changed.
Ms. Cull stated that all official City announcements will be sent to President Curtis Brown.
- Kimberley Mason next spoke to members. She is running for the Columbus City Schools Board of Education. Kimberley lives on the Southside and wants better accountability from the school board, as well as an examination of the funding policy. Her website is www.votekimberleymason.com. Early voting starts October 7, while the general election is November 4, 2025.
- The September Senior Series will be held every Thursday this month at the S. High St. Library (3540 S. High St.) This Civic sponsored event is in collaboration with the Ohio State Extension and the S. High Library. Programs are at 2:00pm, and are as follows:
- Sept. 4. Living with Diabetes
- Sept. 11. Organizing Records
- Sept. 18. Fall Prevention
- Sept. 25 Clearing Clutter
- A Senior Health & Resource Fair will be held at Heritage Free Will Baptist Church, 575 Obetz Rd., on Tuesday, September 16. Time is 10:00am-12:00noon. Everyone is welcome to attend, speak with exhibitors, enjoy light refreshments and even get a flu shot.
- Genealogy At the S. High Library series focuses on family, local history and legacy materials. It’s presented by the Local History & Genealogy team:
- September 15 1-2pm “Beginning Genealogy”
- September 17. 5-7pm. “Starting a Legacy Book”
- September 18. 4-5pm. “History Pop Up”
- Two Blood Drives are scheduled for our neighborhoods:
- Tuesday, September 16, from 9:00am—3:00pm, at the Central Ohio Agency on Aging (3776 S. High St.). Call 1-800-RED-CROSS to donate.
- Wednesday, October 15, from 10:00am—4:00pm, at the Shamrock Club (60 W. Castle)
- The next meeting of the S. High Cookbook Club will be Saturday, September 20, from 1:00pm—2:00pm. The theme this month is “Bread”. Make your favorite bread and come share it with other hungry club members. October’s theme will be “Pumpkin”.

- Trunk or Treat at the Rec Center on October 23, from 5:30pm—7:00pm. Plan for 400 kids in attendance. Candy donations can be brought to our October Meeting.
- Begin collecting $5.00 toys for the Rec Center at our November 10 Meeting.
- Civic Holiday Party will be Monday, December 8 at Heritage Church. This party will take the place of our Civic’s December monthly meeting.
- Buckeye Middle School Fall Festival is planned for October 16 on the lawns for the middle school. All are welcome! The school is seeking volunteers to help with aspects of the event, such as Pumpkin painting, Fall activities, etc. We also need volunteers to man our Civic Resource table. This is a great opportunity to be a visible presence in our community. Interested? Reach out to one of our officers for more information.
- Curtis next spoke about our National Night Out last month: There were 200+ adults & children in attendance. Pictures are available on our Facebook page. 100 book bags were given away very quickly. The majority of Child ID Kits were also distributed. The Bounce House was a hit, as well as the KONA ice truck, the clown, and the Columbus Fire Department’s Safety House. There were 13 community resources in attendance. Columbus Police Liaison officer Guman thanked members for our support and thanked us also for his appreciation gift presented to him by Curtis at NNO. Curtis recognized “Hero Sponsors” Olen Corporation, Your Columbus Dog Walker, The Cakehound and Diane Todd with Howard Hanna Realty Services. He also thanked the many members who showed up and stepped up! Next year’s National Night Out is scheduled for August 4, 2026.
- October Officer Nominations – All officer positions are up for nomination during our October meeting according to Article 9, Section 2. Any member may nominate themselves or another member. Nominees must confirm their willingness to serve in person. All nominations will be taken at the October meeting. Nominations will close at the end of the meeting, and a secret ballot will be created for the November election. President Curtis Brown has stated that he will not accept a nomination for President for 2026.
- Membership dues are past due. Haven’t joined yet? Complete the form and give it to Marsha Kessler with your $5.00 dues payment. ONLY members can vote in November’s election.
- A volunteer is needed for October’s Donut Drop at Station 22. We need to find out when each unit at the Firehouse is scheduled to work.
- The OSU package Door Prize tonight was won by Ed Oberting. It includes OSU playing cards, a decal and a keychain. Congratulations, Ed!
- Our next Civic meeting will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025.
