- NATIONAL NIGHT OUT will take place on August 5, 6:00-8:00pm, at the shelter houses/open spaces behind Scioto Southland Recreation Center. We need volunteers to handle various aspects of the event. Hopefully we’ll recruit at least 10 volunteers. A Firetruck is confirmed and scheduled for 7:00-8:00pm on this day, as well as a dinosaur Bounce House and KONA Ice Truck. We plan on recognizing a local business and our Columbus Police Liaison Officer.
Currently the Civic has had 100 bookbags donated. We need a donation of 70 pencils and notebooks, plus donations of toothbrush/toothpaste combos. Last year all the food was donated, and we’re hoping members can help again this August. We need hot dogs, cookies, plates and cases of water.
To recoup some of our National Night Out expenses, our Civic is offering sponsorship opportunities. This will provide an advertising opportunity to get local businesses involved. There are 3 support tiers available with perks for each tier:
4 sponsors at the $300 level
6 sponsors at the $100 level
10 sponsors at the $50 level
These can be individual or corporate sponsors. Members are encouraged to grab a few flyers and distribute to interested parties.
- Curtis mentioned the Candidates’ Breakfast. Currently there is no interest from the officers or Ambassadors to plan a breakfast. If members wish to have a Candidates’ Breakfast this fall, we would need a member-led committee to plan and organize the event. We will have a Fall Day of Service, as well as participate in the Rec Center’s Trunk or Treat at the end of October.
- This September the Civic will collaborate with the S. High St. Library and the Ohio State University Extension group to bring a series of topics to the Library. This will be held each Thursday in September(4th, 11th, 18th, 25th) at 2:00pm in the meeting room. Topics will include “Living with Diabetes”, “Fall Prevention”, “Clearing Clutter”, and “Organizing Your Records”. Plan to attend!
- Curtis stated that the city of Columbus is getting ready to move into Phase 2 of Zone-In. Phase 1 allowed for increased density and less parking along the major corridors, including S. High St. Phase 2 may allow multi unit housing in areas zoned for single family use. We need to keep this situation on our radar.
- Update on the Buckeye Middle School Future Realignment: The plan is to consolidate for the 2027-2028 school year. The idea is to move the students to Marion Franklin 6-12. No changes to attendance boundaries are expected. The 2025-2026 school year will focus on community engagement and next steps.
- AEP rate increases, driven by PJM market increases, are approximately $13 per month and took effect on June 1. AEP has filed a case with PUCO to increase their distribution rates. If approved, rates will increase approximately $4 a month. When this PUCO case opens, residents can submit formal complaints. Call 800-686-7826, or mail : PUCO, 180 E. Broad St. Columbus. OH. 43215.
- Curtis asked members to invite friends, neighbors and family members to our meetings. We need increased visibility. Members are needed to show up for our own events.
- The DOOR PRIZE tonight was won by Bill Palmer. He received a Graeters’ gift card.
- Cathy Palmer volunteered to provide June’s donuts to the Fire Station.
- A motion was made to adjourn:
1st Motion – Bill Palmer 2nd Motion – Donna Scaggs
Respectfully Submitted,Pam Richards, Secretary
