- Our Civic meeting was held at Heritage Free Will Baptist Church, 575 Obetz Rd., at 6:00pm. Approximately 33 people were in attendance. After reminding members of the decorum policy, President Curtis Brown called the meeting to order. Following the Pledge of Allegiance, Pam Richards opened the meeting with prayer. Curtis recognized all March and April birthdays and anniversaries: Ed Oberting and Vickie Dinsdale had March birthdays; Marsha Kessler and Pam Richards have April birthdays. Nick and Vickie Marcos will celebrate their anniversary on April 23. Congrats!

1st Motion – John Terry 2nd Motion – Bill Palmer
- The Treasurer’s Report (Marsha Kessler) was reported, discussed

1st Motion – Bob Dinsdale 2nd Motion – Brian Humphrey
Our Civic Association has a beginning balance of $2069.36.
- Curtis introduced our speaker for the evening. Jane Acri is the Community Education Program Manager for the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging (COAAA). Her agency serves the interests of older adults in 8 central Ohio counties (Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway & Union counties). Jane discussed health scams and health quackery that target older adults. She mentioned Arthritis Remedies, Anti-Aging Products, Cancer Cures, Weight Loss Products and Memory Aids or Energy Products. Jane cautioned members to beware of medical fraud on the Internet, Identity Theft and Scams that Target Older Adults. She also provided members with a list of Resources we can utilize. At the conclusion of her talk, Jane distributed the new COAAA Resource Guide 2025 to Civic members.
- Curtis provided members with the IRS update. More information is required by March 20 in order for our Civic Association to qualify for exemption.
- Curtis discussed vacant properties. He stated that property owners have the right to let their property decay as long as it is boarded up to the basic standards of city code. The only way the city will intervene is with public nuisance properties. Reporting is the only way to trigger action. Report suspicious activity to the police or call 311. Curtis is currently working with Bob Small about a nuisance property on Marilla Rd. Let Curtis know if you are dealing with any nuisance properties.
- The Area Commission meeting for March was moved to Thursday, March 13. John Hill from Franklin County Mike Stinziano’s office will be present to speak to the community at this meeting. Curtis encouraged all members to attend at least one meeting so they know we care about our neighborhood.
- The Area Commission Zoning meeting is scheduled for March 20 at 6:30pm.
- The Columbus South High Library offers free notary services in person during regular library hours. An appointment is required. Call 614-645-2275 to speak with a staff member or visit them online to schedule.
- Curtis informed members that in the past, our Civic group once had a membership with the Shamrock Club. Curtis feels it would be beneficial for the Civic to rejoin the club. Membership is $50.00 and we are allowed one representative from our group. He asked for a motion to rejoin the club from the members:
1st Motion – Judy Campbell 2nd Motion – Cathy Palmer
The motion passed.
- Clear Creeks & Byways will be in our area on March 22, from 11:00am-1:00pm. They will target Exit 91, S. High St. and Rt. 104 for clean up. If you’re able to assist, meet at 2295 S. High St. at 11am.
- Our Civic Association is joining the citywide cleanup on April 5. The time is 9:00am-12:00noon. We’ll be cleaning Southgate Dr. Meet at 2975 Lee Ellen Pl. Park on the street. Refreshments will be provided. Please sign up on the web site.
- If you’re unable to help with the cleanup on April 5, you have another opportunity to help by manning a booth that same day at the Heritage Free Will Baptist Church Craft Show. We will distribute literature about our Civic, answer people’s questions and drum up interest in our Civic group. The craft show runs 9:00am-3:00pm. Times can be split among multiple people. Sign up online.
- Curtis thanked Buckeye Middle School for allowing us to set up at the RE-Defining Family event. Interest was shown in our Civic Association.
- National Night Out is scheduled for August 5 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the shelter houses behind the Scioto Southland Recreation Center, 3901 Parsons Ave. We are registered for this event. The theme is “Fun Today, Safe Tomorrow”. Ideas for community resources are needed.
- Curtis declared that three seats are available on our Civic’s Board of Trustees. They provide oversight and guidance, review and approve major organizational decisions, serve as a resource and assist in long term planning efforts. There is minimal commitment outside of our meetings. See Curtis if you’re interested in becoming a trustee.
- The Board will vote on our updated ByLaws between meetings. Members will vote on the ByLaws during our April meeting.
- Curtis reminded members that the May primaries are around the corner. We will vote for new Columbus school board members and a City Council person. Vote wisely. City Council candidate Tiara Ross, who works for the Attorney’s office, had a residency issue, thousands of dollars in unpaid parking tickets, and was driving on a suspended license since last September. Vote wisely!
- Diane Todd volunteered to provide the March 31 donuts to the Fire Station. Thank you!
- The Door Prize (Shamrock glasses, St. Patrick’s Day candy and a brand new Civic button) tonight was won by Vickie Marcos. Congrats!
- Our next Civic meeting will be held on Monday, April 14.
- A motion was made to adjourn:
1st Motion – Bill Palmer 2nd Motion – Brian Humphrey
Respectfully Submitted,
Pam Richards, Secretary
